My Review of Becoming - by Michelle Obama (Part 1)
At this point, I have only read the preface through Chapter 5. I
ready Chapter's 6 & 7 this week. I'm reading the book with a girlfriend and
we have weekly calls to discuss what we've read in the past week. She is such a
sweetheart. Our weekly chats are something I look forward to. And the
discussion of this book?! (faints) it is going swimmingly.
Without giving away too much, I feel like aunty Michelle's story
mirrors that of my own upbringing in some ways and then again in other ways,
I'm in total awe at the parenting of her mother. I found myself drawing
similarities and differences in the very first few paragraphs I read. But, as I
read further into it, I see that it was her "destiny" to be the First
Lady. She was exposed to many situations where greatness existed.
I do not yearn to be like her because of her earned prestige. I
admire her because of what she was able to accomplish. I feel like I have seen
a tiny glimpse of her childhood through her written words. Although there is no
mention of it thus far, I get a sense that she was protected. We shall see what
else she says is a part of what had made her become. Thus far, my friend and I
have identified her parents, her grandparents, her brother, her aunt, and the
intellectual abilities that have helped her become. Let's see what else may be
added to this list within the next few chapters.
Stay tuned for Part 2!
